What is the concept of file system?

INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS A FILE SYSTEM?

·                    Basically a file system is the basic part of the operating system which is  responsible for managing of files and also for the resources on which these resides. So without a file system, efficient computing would essentially be impossible.

·         AS Computer inherited files and also files processing from only manual data processing systems. In fact we can say,many of the ideas and also terms are used in connection with computer files are derived from terminology of the manual files. In the computer, the management of all files is handled only by the file system component of  operating system..because of the main memory of all computer is volatile,(i.e which does not retain information).

·         Secondary memory devices are used for random access purposes and also for magnetic tapes for the sequential access.These devices are complex to interact with ,and in the multi-user systems are also shared among users,The OS provides extensive services only for managing the data on secondary memory.

·         Data are well organized at different type of levels, so they can be easily store and also retrieve. These data are well organized into files, collections of all data elements grouped together for purpose of all access control, retrieval and  alsomodification. While the file is fully stored in a filing cabinet on the magnetic disk or any other form of storage,So all files have the same methods of these operation. For example, in an organization, files are arranged into cabinets in some particular order. All files holds data, which is only required for providing all information. When files are arranged in  particular place, it facilitates easy storage and retrieval.
