The operating system makes interaction possible between user and the computer hardware.
There are many operating system available on different categories of computer (Mainframe, Mini, Microcomputer). Examples include:

• 1. DOS/VS on IBM 360/370 a mainframe computer.
• 2.George 3 on ICL-a mainframe computer
• 3.AOS/VS on Data General Computer- a min computer
• 4. UNIX -a multi user OS on pc.
• 5. Windows OS etc
• FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEM
• Some of the functions of OS include:
• 1.Ensuring the smooth operation within the system.
• 2.Simplifying the operation and uses of the computer.
• 3. Transferring/ Loading of program and data from disk into main for execution
• 4. Supervises transfer of data and information from peripheral units to the central processor and vive versa.
• 5. Provides some measures of security for files (programs and data)

TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM

Operating system can be categorized using a number of criteria. However 3 main categories will suffice here.



a. Single User OS: These are operating system that permit only one user to work with computer at any one time. Examples include MS-DOS, OS/2, PC-DOS etc.

b. Multi-User OS: This category of OS usually permits more than one user to have access to one computer system at a time. Examples of OS within these category include UNIX, PC-MOS etc.

c. Network OS: Examples of Network OS include NOVEL,Window 95 upwards. etc.
